Our History: (In brief)
In 1970, concerned seniors from the area worked together to form a Senior Citizens group. That original group met in the Colwood Hall, at the Parks and Recreation Center or sometimes at the 55+ Club in Langford. This group was instrumental in hosting a referendum in 1976 to create the Seniors Citizens 55+ Activity Center. The end result saw a building, intended for the use of the seniors group, scheduled for completion by year end.
Early on, activities and fund raising began. The Arts and Crafts people along with the Ceramics group began to make and sell a variety of items. Raffles were frequently held for donated items.
The original membership maxed at 102. Over the years, membership has increased to approximately 1200. In 1980, we incorporated as a Society under the Society's Act. As our membership increased so did the requirement for more space to meet the demand for more programs and storage. Members have raised over $800,000 to fund various expansion projects. With the help of grants and assistance from local and Provincial Governments, we successfully expanded our existing facility in 2011 to accommodate our continually growing membership and program offerings.
Elections for the executive positions are held once a year. We point out that our center and building are managed by the elected Executive assisted by a Board of Directors. The programs at our center are supported entirely by volunteers. We have no salaried staff, with the exception of the custodian who is supplied by and paid by West Shore Parks and Recreation (WSPR).
To attend any of the programs, one must become a member. Once your membership is paid, the classes or activities you are interested in are free. The only items you pay for are materials that you might require to participate in some of the programs. The center is open to the public for Friday Bingo and various events throughout the year.
